Accessibility

To the south end of the courtyard are two signposted access ramps. One is found to the left of the staircase and one to the right.

On entering the building via the courtyard, you arrive via automatic doors in the main ‘Totem’ area. The your left is access to The Fairmont Empress Hotel via the indoor access ramp.

When accessing the VCC from the courtyard via the automatic doors, a lift is located directly ahead. This will take you down to Level 1. On exiting the lift you will find an elevator to the other floors directly ahead of you, or to your left you can access all rooms on Level 1.

Both of the main glass elevators in the Totem area provide access to all floors and rooms in the VCC. The elevator towards the west end of the building also stops beside the lift, providing access to the Empress Hotel.

At the back of the theatre are two egress points, leading to Level 1. The stage can also be made accessible via a removable Catwalk, and wheelchair users may fill the front three rows of the theatre if arrangements are made to remove seating.

There is a stage lift accessible from Level 1 (outside the operations office) to take passengers directly to the left side of the stage.

Eleven stalls are available for drivers with disabilities.

All parking stalls are found on Level P1, clearly marked and positioned beside button-operated doors to the facility. Doors where access may be more difficult are signposted, directing users to easier entry points.

Each floor in the VCC has one mens’ and one womens’ washroom. Level 2 also has one unisex washroom, designated for mens’ or womens’ use as necessary, depending on client needs. All five washrooms have button-operated automatic doors.

Automatic doors are available to gain access to the Totem area via the courtyard. Clients may also access the facility entirely via automatic doors when entering from the parking lot. All washrooms are equipped with automatic doors.

Both of the main glass elevators in the Totem area provide access to level 2. All spaces on Level 2 are easily accessible

On the main floor of the Crystal Garden (accessible via elevator) a lift is located at the north end of the room, giving wheelchair access to the lower washrooms.

The first floor features one designated accessible washroom with an automatic door.

The second (mezzanine) level has one accessible washroom. Please note that this washroom does not feature an automatic door opening mechanism.

Approaching the main doors on Douglas Street, the door furthest on the right has an automatic door-opening button.

The elevator found to the left (north side) of the foyer on entry provides access to each level of the Crystal Garden. This is the building’s only passenger elevator.
